Many observers of the Rhodes Must Fall and Fees Must Fall student protests that have impacted on South African universities since 2015 have been struck – often shocked – by the level of anger that has welled up among the protesters and at times spilt over into verbal abuse and acts of violence, destruction and intimidation. In so far as this anger may be the most reliable pointer to what is motivating the activism, it is important to fathom what underlies it, otherwise the most well-intentioned efforts to find solutions may be fruitless.
