Our Institutions of Higher Learning (HEIs) have welcomed Government’s planned initiative to phase in fee-free tertiary education for students from households earning less than R350 000 per annum. University funding models are understandably complex and there is no doubt that the Institutions themselves, as well as students, parents and graduate employers have many unanswered questions around what, exactly, fee-free education will look like, and how it may impact each of these important stakeholders. Whilst we cannot attempt to answer all the questions you have, SAGEA chatted to Professor Francis Petersen, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Free State, Tasneem Salasa, Manager Student Financial Aid and Nawaal Boolay, Head Employer Relations, both from the University of Cape Town - in an endeavour to better understand how fee-free education will impact existing scholarship and corporate bursary funding.
