For some time, SAGEA and 71point4 have been monitoring data on young graduates and their employment status. On the supply side, administrative data demonstrates strong growth in graduate output from South Africa’s universities. But there appears to be a mismatch between supply and demand; survey data indicates that a growing number of young graduates are unemployed.
This was a visible feature of the market even before Covid-19 and is likely to persist in a post-pandemic context, particularly if austerity measures reduce recruitment by the State. Our webinar will explore the data and invite discussion on areas for further research and potential interventions to reduce graduate unemployment.
